Should I Get Tested?

Genetic testing can sometimes help you learn more about your health. There are several kinds of genetic testing that you can get at different stages of your life. It is important to think about what these tests can and cannot tell you about your health before making any decisions.

What Does My DNA Say?

Genome sequencing is not your average diagnostic test. A blood pressure test will give you a straightforward “yes” or “no” answer about your health. DNA sequencing will often give you a “maybe.”

Before and After Baby

Before and during pregnancy, there is a lot of information you can find out about your health and your unborn baby’s health through genetic testing. Once a baby is born, there are tests that help identify conditions so treatment can start before symptoms do.

Healthcare Providers and Genetics

If you or a family member is concerned about a genetic condition, your regular doctor – your primary care provider – may refer you to a genetics professional. You also may need other medical specialists to treat or manage a genetic disorder (for example, a surgeon or nutritionist).
